A childhood memory...
02/24/2009 Chaverim Yikarim,
While poking around YouTube I came across this version of a melody for Psalm 130, written by Eliyakim Gutman, H"YD and taught to his family. To me, it is an example of the deeply affecting pre-Holocaust niggunim (melodies) I heard chanted by Chazanim (Cantors) while growing up. It is a good example of the Ashkenazi (Eastern European) tradition, in my opinion; I find it hauntingly beautiful, and wanted to share it with you (there's a 20 second intro in Hebrew). Hanoch Click here: YouTube - Psalm 130 Eliyakim Gutman H"YD A song of Ascents. from the the depths I call out unto You, O Lord. O Lord hear my voice. Let your ears be attentive to the sound of my supplications. If you, O Lord pay heed to iniquities, who, O Lord will stand? Indeed, forgiveness is with You, so that You may be feared. I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and I hope for His word. My soul waits for the Lord, among those who watch for the morning, who watch for the morning. Israel, hope for the Lord. for with the Lord is lovingkindness, and with Him is abundant redemption. And He will redeem Israel from all his iniquities.
